Free LOTRO and £10 points card for 'LOTRO'

Just in case you didn't already know, The Lord of the Rings Online has now joined the ranks of the free to play MMORPG's and you can technically play without handing over a penny, check out lotro.com if you want more.

Introducing an innovative new pricing model, players will be able to download the game and play for free as well as purchase expansions, quest packs, items, and account services à la carte from the new LOTRO Store opening on Tuesday 2nd November 2010.

Following Lord Of The Rings Online's free-to-play relaunch earlier this week, Codemasters is giving away five 1000 points cards (valued at around £10) to spend in the game's store, allowing you to purchase additional character slots, potions and expansion packs.

We'll be giving the points away. Follow the instructions at that time to be in with a chance.

Note that this is for UK entrants only and that our decision is final.

The free-to-play version of Lord Of The Rings Online is available from lotro-europe.com.

Codemasters Online has announced the launch of free-to-play Lord of the Rings Online in Europe.

Players can now download Lord of the Rings Online and join other adventurers as they explore Middle-earth and progress up to level 50 for free.

Players can also choose to visit the new LOTRO Store to purchase expansions, quest packs, items, and account services à la carte, or join the VIP program that provides unlimited access to the game for a monthly price.

The game has also been expanded with the introduction of the new region of Enedwaith.

"We are thrilled to finally be able to launch LOTRO as a free-to-play game and introduce the new store and updated content in Europe today. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our players for their patience. It is very much appreciated," said David Solari, vice president and general manager of Codemasters Online. "We anticipate the LOTRO's new free-to-play model will significantly increase our customer base and we look forward to welcoming everyone to Middle-earth."

Lord of the Rings Online can be downloaded for free from lotro.com.

Free-to-play is fast becoming the go-to method for turning a flagging MMO into a successful game. Turbine's Dungeons & Dragons Online was rejuvenated by the appeal of free play back in autumn 2009, attracting one million players and recording a 500 per cent boost in revenues.

There's no reason Lord of the Rings Online can't match or better the success of D&D.

LOTRO client crashes all the time :(

Normally, it would happen 5 or, say, 10 times a day - each play session, and naturally results in me being killed or missing out on something important.

I'm really pis*** off. I don't know why this is happening.

Worts part is, I can see no pattern to it.
It frequently occurs when fighting or even when I'm on horse travelling from town to town.

My setup is quite advanced: no problems with any other games at all.

LOTRO announced release of 10th Book - "The City of the Kings"

Turbine just has released new details of the 2nd major update to LOTRO. They boast more than forty new quests, all with major impact on the forces defending or assailing the different keeps available. Other notable improvements are:- Monster players can now log directly into their monster player character from the character selection screen- Quests to call support into Tol Ascarnen, Lugazag, and the Grimwood Lumber Camp have had the number of objects needed to enlist the aid of the assailants reduced to 25% of their previous numbers.- You can forge tribes to stalk the Ettenmoors and gain the rudimentary benefits available to player kinships- updated the functionality of the maps given out as rewards for completing quests for the different take and hold locations- !! A real Hobbit hole house

Just for a change - no LOTRO videos now, but a jawdropping story about a man who built himself a real Hobbit hole house. Just couldnt resist to reprint this. Enjoy.

"A Low Impact Woodland Home" by Simon Dale

Now I had originally intended to take you on a tour through the various hobbit holes that exist in our wonderful world, but it turns out that as a group, those who tend towards these houses apparently disdain the creation of a decent website, and even further hate actual content. So I am grateful for Simon Dale, the man behind "A Low Impact Woodland Home", who has provided me with great photos, and has a fantastic website.

Simon, with his wife, father in law and two young children spent 4 months building what they have termed a low impact woodland home, which is now their family home. An estimated 1000-1500 man hours and £3000 were put in to what is, in my opinion, a dream home.

Simon, who is more than willing to tote the fact that he is in no way an architect or certified builder, believes that a house of this scale is within the reach of any able-bodied person.

The house, which was built with a maximum regard for the environment around it, is dug soundly into the hill around it. The idea of earth sheltering for housing is not a new idea either, and is more than just a "nifty hippie" way to help the environment; it also helps your bank account. When built into the ground, such a house will retain heat in the winter, and be very cool in the summer.

The dirt from the diggings into the hill provided the basis for the foundations and retaining walls, and a mud and turf, when combined with a plastic sheet, makes for the perfect roof.

Wood from the surrounding woodland provides not only heat but also wood for the frame of the house.

So the mysterious hobbits aren't the only ones that believe that living in the ground is a feasible way of life. Seeing the houses like these gives me hope that - given the right amount of money - I’ll soon be living in my very own ecologically friendly home. Just as long as I have my computer, a light for my reading, and the internet, I should be happy.

Thanks for the vid Steph! Actually, I got a label for this kind of LOTRO ingame stuff - off-beat videos, and that's the stuff I enjoy most of all among whatever kind of videos fellow LOTRO players happen to produce - just like stuff where author enjoys the realm of LOTRO and just wanders around and does all kinds of weird things - possible only in virtual reality. Or, as Steph worded it, "Just a bit of sillyness in all the doom and gloom."

And I'm not alone - S-M-I-L-E video apparently appealed to spectators. One of most recents comments was "I took a break from slashing stuff up and getting covered in gore, and had a smile." - so have a real good smile :)

Turbine has offered first details on the next big content update for Lord of the Rings Online, including the news that a new gameplay type is to be introduced in Book 10. Exec producer tells CVG about Book 10 and reveals a new gameplay element to be introduced.Prising details from the mouth of executive producer Jeffrey Steefel recently in an interview, we (ComputerandVideoGames.com) were told, "...Amarthiel, who is this new character that we've introduced who is in search of a powerful ring - that's a big part of Book 10. Reportedly, The LOTRO developerss present a few upcoming features. During their recent dev chat on June 28, the Lord of the Rings: Shadows of Angmar team presented a few upcoming features, some of which are still in development. As early as this fall, players can expect new zones to explore, though they won’t be on the same scale as the Shores of Evendim, the first free update, available in June. Book 10 also has its share of features, notably for jewelers, who will be able to manufacture bracelets and earrings. I've got few LotRO items for sale.

Well, question what to do with excess items arises every so often, and I spotted an interesting discussion on this matter, here is a quick summary:

What you guys do with all your loot? I have every slot full plus the storage (will not pay the absurd amount to increase storage space) I have put 10 items on sale (that’s all you can put at once on sale?) but still no sale, trust me they are real cheap but still no sale, I’m thinking in three things :

1 – Start a Guild to just support Noobs, thus given the items to them, for free of course.

2 – I had enough of all this crap, will destroy the excess baggage.

3 – Ok guys, party time, give away all excess crap.

4 - sell to NPC merchant, at least I make some Gold.

Well, there is another option. Since you can create total of 3 characters on the same server, you can create 2 more characters to be used as extra storage. The number of items that you can put on sale will be 30, and you will also increase your storage slots by an additional 128.

So, in total, you create 158 free slots for yourself!

If its normal/green armour or a weapon sell it to the merchant.

Only keep or sell green armour if it has good enough stats to be used for PvP (i.e 4 slots 3% skill block+). Rare weapons also sell as they lack the stats to be good enough to use for anyone.

Most uniques sell to the merchant to unless yet again the stats are good there are loads of uniques that just sit there on the AH and not sell if you need gold fast merchant it otherwise even sell them on AH for 3 times the price of the merchant and someone will buy it to try and make a profit.

I personally only sell stones on the AH unless my gear is up for sale which the guild dont need as selling a couple of stones is enough gold for me to gain a level or do what i need to do.

There lots of useful how-tos on the proper strategy in taking Ost Ringdyr. Sadly, the team was understaffed (merely 16), there were two freep ranged poking at their warleaders, and a team member left in the middle of the raid - which sure was critical to the team success at the end. Nevertheless, it's still a good raid.

Lotro music by lute is easy - that's been confirmed over and over again. And here is this very nice video of a guy playing Hotel California amazingly! He was spotted playing this in Ost Guruth - palyer actually stopped the song in the middle and started it over in a little while. Author recorded this using FRAPS.

This is such a beautiful piece and it's not done with the music program - yes, you dont need lotro song converter to play it yourself.

Question s, Misty Mountains was great, this one too - Rivendell is truly beautifull. What graphic card does he use?
And authors sez:
Nvidia 7900GS, all settings maxed it runs about 20-60fps. Loading textures causes slight pauses sometimes but this video is bit choppy mostly because of recording with Fraps.

Author of this quite unusual LOTRO video claims it's a sort of trip, and an adventure in the land of LOTRO like NO OTHER. Hmm...I tend to agree. It's a subtitled movie set in the realm of LOTRO - ahev you seen anything like this? Myself, no - until I watched this vid. Recommended.

LOTRO expands - Glorfindel joins ranks of Middle Earth characters

Turbine just have announced that they added a new character to their Codex, the great Glorfindel.

Meet the Elf-lord, Glorfindel, who was said to be one of the most powerful of all the Eldar. ( http://www.lotro.com/article/360)
Here is what the article says:

The Elf-lord Glorfindel is one of the most powerful of all the Eldar of Middle-earth, counted great among the Wise. He remembers well the elder days of the world, and bears the great power and knowledge of ages past. His wrath can bring terror even to the Nazgûl of Sauron.

In the days following the fall of Fornost, Glorfindel came to the aid of Eärnur, prince of Gondor, as he pursued the Witch-king of Angmar back to Carn Dûm. Eärnur's host would have been destroyed, but the sudden appearance of the Elf-lord sent the Witch-king retreating in fear. It was Glorfindel who prophesied that no man would defeat the Witch-king, and who lent his steed Asfaloth to Frodo Baggins during the Ring-bearer's flight from the Nazgûl across the Ford of Bruinen.

In The Lord of the Rings, Glorfindel was one of the chief counselors of Elrond and a powerful member of the White Council. While Glorfindel first appears in The Lord of the Rings Online^TM: Shadows of Angmar^TM at Rivendell, players should not be surprised if he appears at some unexpected moment as "an Elf-lord revealed in his wrath...."

LOTRO Poetry Contest with cash prizes

Too bad I heard about The Green Dragon Inn Poetry Contest sooo late - I do have quite a few poems set in LOTRO realm. The contest was run at The Green Dragon Inn (Landroval Community Website), deadline for submission was May 8th :(, and the prize was a 90-day game subscription. I quite liked the contest rules:

- Submissions must include a Landroval character's name (above level 8)
- Only one submission per person (or household).

- cause I do have a written poem which meets the rules :(

Good news is, today I found another poetry contest I'm going to participate in - cause even regular prize - NOT a grand prize! - could buy me more than 8 years (right, eight) in game :) - they are giving $1,000 to $10,000 to amateur poets in the coming months. Guys, LET'S JOIN TOGETHER and spice that contest with some LOTRO verses :)
